Adelaide Central Market
Fresh food since 1869
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Operating continuously since 1869, the Adelaide Central Market is one of the largest covered fresh produce markets in the Southern Hemisphere. Spread beneath a single vast roof in the heart of the city, its 70-plus traders offer everything from artisan cheese and handmade pasta to exotic spices, fresh seafood, and locally grown fruit and vegetables.
The market is a genuine community institution rather than a tourist novelty. Regulars and visitors shop side by side at stalls run by independent traders, many of them family businesses spanning several generations. A free audio tour guides first-time visitors through the history and personalities of the market, and a free trolley hire service makes carrying purchases easier.
The Friday evening session is particularly lively, with the market staying open late and a festive atmosphere building across the stalls. A rotating Producer in Residence programme brings regional South Australian growers and makers directly to shoppers, and the Market Made initiative supports local artisans and small-batch producers.
Parking is available in the multi-storey carpark directly above the market, accessible from Gouger Street. The surrounding Market Quarter precinct adds cafes, restaurants, and independent retailers to the visit.
