Airlie Beach Lagoon
Sting-free waterfront swimming
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
The Airlie Beach Lagoon is a 4,000-square-metre saltwater swimming facility sitting right on the town foreshore, offering safe year-round swimming without the risk of marine stingers or wildlife from the surrounding Coral Sea. Lifeguard-patrolled and completely free to use, the lagoon is a favourite gathering place for families, backpackers, and locals throughout the year.
The lagoon features varied depth zones suitable for all ages and abilities, including a shallow children's pool with shade sails, open swim areas reaching up to two metres deep, and a pedestrian bridge connecting both sides of the facility. Surrounding parkland provides electric barbecues, shaded picnic tables, change rooms, and showers.
Located on Shute Harbour Road in the heart of Airlie Beach, the lagoon serves as the social hub of the town. Nearby cafes and the marina precinct add to the relaxed atmosphere, and the facility is wheelchair accessible throughout.
Opening hours follow a seasonal pattern, with extended evening access during the warmer months. The lagoon is patrolled by lifeguards during all opening hours, making it a reliable and well-maintained public facility managed by Whitsunday Regional Council.
