Alligator Gorge
Quartzite narrows and ring formations
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Alligator Gorge is the showpiece of Mount Remarkable National Park in the southern Flinders Ranges, a narrow slot canyon where Alligator Creek has cut through ancient quartzite to create sheer 40-metre walls, distinctive eroded ring formations and a series of natural steps and pools. Located about 10 kilometres south of Wilmington, it is one of the most visually striking short walks in South Australia.
The signature walk follows the gorge floor through the Narrows, where the canyon pinches to a few metres wide and the quartzite walls rise dramatically on either side. The rings and steps in the rock are caused by differential erosion along bedding planes, creating a layered texture unique to this gorge. The circuit continues up to a terrace lookout with views over the ranges before looping back to the carpark.
Wildlife is plentiful, with emus, grey kangaroos, kookaburras and echidnas all regularly spotted. The gorge is shaded for much of the day, making it pleasant even in summer. The full ring-route walk covers around two kilometres and takes roughly 90 minutes.
Visitors should check the Parks SA alerts page before travelling and pay the vehicle entry fee online in advance as there is no staffed gate on site.
