Art, science and heritage combined
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Set along Larapinta Drive two kilometres west of the Alice Springs CBD, the Araluen Cultural Precinct brings together an arts centre, three museums and a collection of public sculptures on a single campus. It is the cultural heart of the Red Centre, housing a large permanent collection of Albert Namatjira's watercolours alongside natural history displays, aviation history and contemporary Indigenous art.
The Araluen Arts Centre anchors the precinct with four galleries including the dedicated Albert Namatjira Gallery, which holds an extensive collection of the Western Arrernte artist's celebrated landscape paintings. The gallery program rotates throughout the year and regularly includes works by living Arrernte and Luritja artists, making each visit different from the last.
The Museum of Central Australia explores the natural and cultural history of the region, including the Strehlow Research Centre collection, which documents decades of linguistic and ethnographic work with Arrernte communities. Nearby, the Central Australian Aviation Museum occupies an original hangar and traces the history of outback aviation with restored aircraft and archival photographs.
The precinct is also home to the Yeperenye Sculpture, a large-scale work celebrating Arrernte caterpillar dreaming, and several other public artworks scattered through the grounds. Entry to all three museums and the galleries is covered by a single admission price, giving the precinct exceptional value for the depth of content on offer.
