Armidale Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place
Living cultures of six nations
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Located on Kentucky Street in central Armidale, this premier cultural institution preserves and celebrates the living heritage of the six Aboriginal nations of the New England Tablelands: Anaiwan, Kamilaroi, Dunghutti, Ngarabal, Banbai, and Gumbaynggirr peoples. Rotating gallery exhibitions, traditional artworks available for purchase, and a well-stocked gift shop offer visitors a genuine and respectful engagement with the region's First Nations cultures.
The centre operates as both a community facility and a public cultural venue, with programs serving elders, families, and people of all backgrounds. Exhibitions draw on collections from major institutions around Australia and are complemented by permanent displays of traditional Aboriginal paintings and artefacts. A family history research service is available for people tracing their Aboriginal heritage in the region.
Cultural tours and hands-on workshops can be arranged through the centre, covering topics such as traditional craft, bush foods, language, and the deep history of the New England Tablelands. Bookings are essential for these activities, as minimum group numbers apply.
The centre is open Monday to Friday and on Saturday mornings, making it accessible for visitors passing through Armidale midweek or on a weekend stop.
