Art Gallery of Western Australia
A century of Western Australian art
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Founded in 1895, the Art Gallery of Western Australia holds the State's most significant public collection of art, spanning more than 18,000 works across five centuries of Australian, Indigenous and international practice. Housed in a striking building within the Perth Cultural Centre, the gallery is free to enter and just minutes from Perth Train Station, making it one of the city's most accessible cultural destinations.
The permanent collection highlights exceptional works by Western Australian and Aboriginal artists alongside important examples of colonial-era Australian painting. Rotating exhibitions ensure the galleries feel fresh across multiple visits, with major international touring shows supplementing the home collection throughout the year.
The gallery's free guided tours run throughout the day and offer an excellent grounding in the collection's breadth. Specialist exhibitions focusing on photography, ceramics and contemporary practice occupy dedicated spaces on the upper floors.
The building is part of the wider Perth Cultural Centre precinct, which also houses WA Museum Boola Bardip, the State Library and the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, making the whole block an easy cultural afternoon.
