Perched on a dramatic mesa called The Jump-Up, near Winton and roughly 175 kilometres from Longreach, this world-class museum holds the largest collection of Australian dinosaur fossils anywhere on earth. Guided tours take visitors into working preparation laboratories where real bones are cleaned and catalogued by trained staff and volunteers.
The museum's centrepiece is its collection of sauropod and theropod dinosaurs unique to Queensland, including Diamantinasaurus and Australovenator, discovered in the surrounding Winton Formation. Tour groups watch technicians chip matrix from genuine fossil bones in the prep lab, then move through the fossil hall and collection room to see mounted skeletons and learn how each specimen was excavated.
The surrounding landscape is part of the attraction. The Jump-Up mesa rises 75 metres above the surrounding plains and offers sweeping 360-degree views across the Winton Formation, the same ancient lake bed that produced so many of the fossils on display. The museum also runs access to the nearby Dinosaur Stampede National Monument at Lark Quarry.
