Established in 1858, the Ballarat Botanical Gardens spread across 40 hectares on the western shore of Lake Wendouree and rank among the best-preserved Victorian-era botanical gardens in Australia. Free to enter, they offer sweeping lawns, a collection of Italian marble statues, exotic specimen trees, colourful seasonal bedding displays, and the ornate Robert Clark Conservatory, all set against the serene backdrop of the lake.

The gardens were designed in the grand tradition of 19th-century public parks, with sweeping paths, formal garden beds, and an impressive collection of mature exotic trees that include centuries-old elms and conifers. The annual Begonia Festival, held each March, fills the conservatory and surrounding beds with thousands of blooms and draws visitors from across Victoria. Marble statues sourced from Italy dot the grounds, lending the gardens an elegantly classical atmosphere.

The Robert Clark Conservatory is open daily and provides a sheltered floral display year-round, with seasonal planting schemes refreshed throughout the year. A separate Prime Ministers' Avenue features busts of all Australian Prime Ministers, offering an unusual open-air civics experience woven into the garden walk.

Entry is free at all times. Parking is available along Wendouree Parade and on Gillies Street. The gardens connect directly to the Lake Wendouree walking circuit, making it easy to combine both attractions in a single visit.
