Barmah National Park
World's largest red gum forest
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Barmah National Park, on Yorta Yorta Country about 35 kilometres north-west of Echuca, protects the Barmah-Millewa Forest, the largest river red gum forest in the world. The forest is a Ramsar-listed wetland and one of Victoria's most important waterbird breeding areas, with more than 200 recorded bird species.
River red gums here can reach 45 metres in height and live for over 500 years, their silver trunks rising from floodplains that fill with water in wet seasons and support an extraordinary range of wildlife. Koalas, kangaroos, and emus are regularly seen, along with brolgas, sea eagles, spoonbills, and azure kingfishers.
The park offers several walking trails starting from the Dharnya Centre near the township of Barmah. The Yamyabuc Discovery Trail introduces the natural and cultural features of the forest, while the Broken Creek Loop Walk traces the creek through red gum and grey box woodland. Fishing, canoeing, and swimming are popular along the Murray River and Barmah Lake.
The park is jointly managed by Parks Victoria and the Yorta Yorta Nations Aboriginal Corporation. Entry is free, though camping fees apply for overnight stays.
