Big Brook Dam
Lakeside walk in karri regrowth
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Constructed in 1986 to supply water to Pemberton and the town's trout hatchery, Big Brook Dam sits within Big Brook State Forest 5 kilometres northwest of town. A sealed 4-kilometre walking track follows the shoreline of the dam through 60-year-old karri regrowth, passing bird hides, a sandy beach, and sheltered lookout points along the way.
The walking trail is flat, fully sealed, and wide enough for wheelchairs and prams, making it one of the most accessible nature walks in the south west. It takes around 60 to 90 minutes at a relaxed pace. Purpose-built bird hides along the water's edge are well positioned for watching waterfowl, and the forest surrounding the dam supports a variety of native animals including kangaroos, echidnas, and numerous honeyeaters.
The sandy beach area is popular for a swim on warm days, and the dam is stocked with trout, making it a quiet fishing spot for those with a licence. Canoeing and kayaking are permitted on the water. Picnic tables and barbecue facilities are clustered near the main carpark, and toilets are available on site.
Big Brook Dam is free to visit and sits on the Karri Forest Explorer Drive, a signed touring route that links many of the natural attractions in and around Pemberton.
