Bigurda Trail
Clifftop walk, ocean panoramas
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
The Bigurda Trail is an 8.5-kilometre one-way coastal walk through the free-entry section of Kalbarri National Park, hugging the cliff tops between Eagle Gorge and Natural Bridge. Named on Nanda Country, the trail passes a succession of dramatic rock formations including Island Rock, Grandstand, and Shellhouse, with expansive Indian Ocean views throughout and a boardwalk section connecting Natural Bridge and Island Rock.
The trail typically takes three to four hours one way, though multiple access points at Island Rock, Grandstand, and Shellhouse allow visitors to walk shorter sections ranging from about one kilometre upward. The terrain alternates between sandy cliff-top paths, red paved sections, and boardwalk, with the cliffs dropping steeply to the ocean below. Between July and November, migrating humpback whales are frequently visible from the higher sections of the trail.
Eagle Gorge at the southern end of the trail is a standout feature, a narrow ocean inlet cut into the sandstone where waves funnel into the gorge and surge against the walls. The northern endpoint, Natural Bridge, is a sandstone arch formed by wave erosion that frames open ocean through its opening. The trail is exposed and can be very hot in summer, so an early start and adequate water are essential. No national park pass is required for this coastal section.
