Binalong Bay Beach
White sand, orange granite
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Binalong Bay Beach anchors the southern gateway to the Bay of Fires, delivering a sweep of powder-white sand framed by granite boulders blazing with orange lichen. The sheltered bay offers calm, crystal-clear water ideal for swimming, snorkelling among weedy sea dragons, and kayaking. The village sits just 11 km north-east of St Helens and serves as the perfect base for exploring the wider coast.
Binalong Bay is one of Tasmania's most celebrated coastal destinations, renowned for the vivid contrast between its white quartz sand, azure shallows, and the rust-orange lichen-encrusted granite outcrops that define the Bay of Fires palette. The main beach is a gentle, family-friendly swimming spot sheltered from ocean swell, with rock pools at either end offering snorkelling encounters with local marine life including weedy sea dragons and diverse reef fish.
Beyond the main beach, visitors can walk or paddle northward to reach Jeanneret Beach, Cosy Corner, and other secluded shores strung along the C848 road through the Bay of Fires Conservation Area. Local operators run eco tours by water and 4WD, while independent travellers can hire kayaks or explore on mountain bike. Sunrise from Humbug Point Reserve, a short walk from the village, is a highlight for photographers. Public toilets, picnic facilities, and a boat ramp are available at the beach reserve.
