Blue Derby Mountain Bike Trails
World-class trails through rainforest
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Blue Derby is one of Australia's premier mountain bike destinations, with more than 135 kilometres of purpose-built singletrack winding through ancient temperate rainforest in north-east Tasmania. Trails suit every ability level, from gentle green runs to demanding black-diamond descents featuring granite rock slabs, jump lines and sweeping berms. The trailhead sits right in the heart of Derby, with showers, a bike wash, cafes and parking all within easy reach.
The trail network has transformed Derby from a quiet former tin-mining village into a globally recognised riding destination, attracting cyclists from across Australia and beyond. Trails range from the flowing green Detour and blue-rated Dash for Cash to the infamous black descents of Krushka's and Rocky Horror, with the full-day Blue Tier wilderness loop catering to adventurers seeking an all-mountain epic. An on-site pump track provides a warm-up or standalone session for younger riders.
The network is maintained daily by the Blue Derby Foundation and is completely free to ride year-round. Blue Tier and Big Chook trails close seasonally from July through late September to protect the trail surface during winter, but the bulk of the Derby town trails remain open 365 days a year. April to mid-June and September to mid-November are considered peak season, when trails are in prime condition. Shuttle services and guided tours are available through local operators for those who want to maximise descent time.
