Bluewater Lagoon
Free swimming on the Pioneer River
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Right in the heart of Mackay city, the Bluewater Lagoon is a free outdoor swimming facility set on the banks of the Pioneer River. Three tiered lagoons, equivalent in total to three Olympic swimming pools, provide a safe, stinger-free environment for families and swimmers of all ages, with a water slide and a waterfall feature adding to the fun.
The lagoon opened as part of a waterfront revitalisation of central Mackay and has become one of the most popular spots in the region for both locals and visitors. The tiered design means shallow areas for young children sit alongside deeper pools for stronger swimmers, all without any entry charge. Maximum depth reaches 1.8 metres in the lower section.
The facility is operated by Mackay Regional Council and sits within a grassed foreshore reserve with shaded picnic areas and barbecues, making it an easy spot for a half-day outing. The upper lagoon and water slide operate on weekends, public holidays, and school holidays.
Opening hours shift seasonally between roughly 9am and 5:45pm. The lagoon is closed during severe weather events. Pets are not permitted on site.
