Bowali Visitor Centre
Gateway to understanding Kakadu
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Bowali Visitor Centre, located on the Kakadu Highway near Jabiru, is the essential first stop for any serious visit to the park. The award-winning building, shaped like a long Aboriginal rock shelter with rammed earth walls, ironwood floors and a natural stone billabong, houses walk-through exhibits on Kakadu's landscapes, wildlife and the culture of its Bininj and Mungguy Traditional Owners.
Inside, expertly designed displays introduce the five seasons of the Kakadu year, a framework shaped by thousands of years of Aboriginal ecological knowledge, as well as the park's geological history, its extraordinary biodiversity and the ongoing co-management relationship between the Traditional Owners and Parks Australia. Staff at the centre are Kakadu experts and can help visitors plan routes, check access conditions and book ranger-guided activities.
Seasonal guided programs departing from Bowali include rock art talks, bush walks, and painting and weaving demonstrations led by Aboriginal rangers and community members. Evening presentations are also offered during the dry season. The centre is free to enter and does not require a park pass.
Bowali is located 5 kilometres west of Jabiru town. It opens from 9 am to 5 pm in the dry season and 10 am to 4 pm in the wet season, closing on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. The adjacent grounds include a billabong walk and native garden.
