Broken River Platypus Viewing, Eungella
Platypus capital of the world
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Tucked into the Clarke Range 80 kilometres west of Mackay, the Broken River picnic area offers one of the best opportunities in the world to see wild platypus in their natural habitat. Purpose-built timber viewing platforms overlook the clear flowing river, where patient visitors scanning for ripples and bubbles at dawn or dusk are rewarded with sightings of these extraordinary monotremes feeding just metres away.
Eungella National Park protects the longest unbroken stretch of subtropical rainforest on the Australian coast, and Broken River sits at its heart. The river runs through 52,900 hectares of ancient rainforest, home not only to platypus but also to azure kingfishers, freshwater turtles, and the endemic Eungella honeyeater found nowhere else on Earth.
The viewing platforms are free and open to the public year-round. The best sightings happen in the early morning or late afternoon when platypus are actively feeding. Approach quietly and watch the water surface, a diving bird or rising bubbles often signals a platypus working the riverbed below.
A network of walking tracks fans out from the picnic area, ranging from short riverside strolls to longer ridge hikes with sweeping views across the Pioneer Valley rainforest. The nearby township of Eungella has a small general store and a mountain resort, making it easy to base yourself overnight.
