Buchan Caves Reserve
Ancient limestone underground
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Buchan Caves Reserve protects Victoria's most spectacular limestone cave system, hidden in the forested foothills of the Victorian Alps near the small town of Buchan, about 56 kilometres north of Lakes Entrance. Rangers lead guided tours through Royal Cave and Fairy Cave, revealing dramatic stalactite and stalagmite formations that took hundreds of thousands of years to grow.
The reserve sits on Krauatungalung Country and holds deep significance to the Gunaikurnai Traditional Owners, whose cultural heritage is interwoven with the landscape above and below ground. Above the caves, wallabies, wombats, echidnas and the occasional platypus can be spotted in the surrounding parkland, and lyrebirds can sometimes be heard calling from the gully scrub.
Royal Cave is the larger and more elaborately decorated of the two main show caves, adorned with coloured flowstone and delicate shawl formations. Fairy Cave is smaller and more intimate, prized for its pure white helictite formations. Both caves maintain a constant temperature of around 15 degrees Celsius, so a light layer is recommended regardless of the weather outside.
Tickets must be purchased in advance via the Parks Victoria booking portal, though same-day tickets are available if spots remain. The reserve grounds, walking tracks and picnic areas are free to enter and are open daily from dawn to dusk.
