Castle Hill Lookout
360-degree views over Townsville
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Rising 286 metres above Townsville, the distinctive pink granite monolith of Castle Hill is the city's most recognisable landmark. Whether you drive to the summit or tackle one of several walking tracks, the reward is a sweeping panorama taking in the Coral Sea, Magnetic Island, the CBD, and the surrounding ranges. Entry is free and the site is accessible year-round.
Castle Hill Road winds up to a car park and lookout platform near the summit, making the views accessible to anyone. A network of walking tracks begins lower down and suits a range of fitness levels, from a gentle stroll along the base to a steep climb direct to the top. A shared-use trail links the CBD directly to the hill, so you can walk there from the city centre without needing a car.
At the top, shaded seating, picnic facilities, gazebos, drinking fountains, and accessible toilets make it comfortable to linger. Sunrise and sunset visits are particularly popular with photographers, as the light plays across the granite and the city below.
The hill is a geological standout, a Precambrian pink granite intrusion that has resisted erosion for millions of years. Local walkers treat it as a daily fitness ritual, and the tracks are busy every morning with residents of all ages.
