Central Deborah Gold Mine
Descend into gold rush history
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Standing at the heart of Bendigo, the Central Deborah Gold Mine is the last commercial mine to operate on one of the world's richest goldfields. Active from 1939 to 1954, it yielded 929 kilograms of gold across 17 levels and 15 kilometres of tunnels. Today visitors can descend 61 metres underground to experience the dark, damp reality of life as a Bendigo miner.
The mine was purchased by Bendigo City Council in 1970, preserving a working slice of the gold rush era for future generations. The underground Mine Experience Tour takes groups 61 metres below the surface to Level 2, where guides bring to life the brutal conditions miners endured, working ankle-deep in water, filling ore trucks by hand, and communicating only by bell signals.
Above ground, the heritage-listed engine houses and headframe remain intact, and visitors can explore the surface precinct at their own pace. The site also offers multi-attraction passes that combine the mine with Bendigo's Vintage Talking Tram, making it a natural hub for a full day in the city.
The Mine Experience Tour runs for 75 minutes and requires sturdy footwear. Children are welcome on the underground tour. For those preferring to stay above ground, a separate surface-only ticket gives access to the buildings and equipment.
