Central Station
Tall trees, ancient sand
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Central Station sits in the geographical heart of K'gari and holds what scientists consider one of the most remarkable forests on earth, tall rainforest growing in pure sand. The island's satinay and brush box trees reach towering heights by drawing trace minerals from the sand and working with fungi on the forest floor. Wanggoolba Creek flows silently through the understorey, its water so clear the creek bed appears almost dry.
The site began as a logging camp in the 1860s and grew into a small settlement complete with a school for workers' children. By the mid-twentieth century logging had wound down and the area became a Queensland Parks ranger base. The remnant infrastructure is woven into the rainforest setting, giving the site a layered historical and ecological character.
The Wanggoolba Creek boardwalk is an easy 700-metre loop suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Wanggoolba Creek is sacred to the Butchulla people and visitors are asked to walk quietly and stay on the boardwalk. Picnic tables and toilets are available. Central Station is accessible via inland sand tracks and is located about 9 km north of Lake McKenzie. Camping is available with a Queensland Parks booking.
