Churchill Island Heritage Farm
Victoria's first cultivated farmland
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Churchill Island is a small, verdant island linked to Phillip Island by a timber bridge, and it holds a remarkable place in Australian agricultural history. As the site of the first successful crops and livestock farming in Victoria, the heritage farm offers daily demonstrations of traditional skills, sheep shearing, cow milking, and working dog displays, in a serene pastoral setting.
The island was first farmed by Samuel Amess in the 1860s, and the lovingly maintained heritage buildings, gardens, and paddocks reflect that pioneering era. The working farm is home to cattle, sheep, Clydesdales, chickens, and other livestock that visitors can meet and feed throughout the day.
Live demonstrations run every day except Christmas, with shearers, milkers, and dog handlers showing traditional techniques that once underpinned rural life across the Australian colonies. The blacksmith workshop, old homestead, and heritage rose garden add further depth to the historical experience.
A cafe operates on site, with outdoor tables overlooking the tranquil waterways and gardens that surround the island. The scenery is particularly attractive for photographers and those looking for a relaxed, unhurried contrast to the busier mainland attractions.
