Daintree River Cruise Centre
Wildlife cruises on the Daintree
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Stationed just south of Daintree Village on the lower Daintree River, the Daintree River Cruise Centre has been running wildlife cruises since 1987. One-hour guided boat tours travel slowly along the tannin-stained river looking for saltwater crocodiles on the banks, kingfishers darting through the mangroves, and Boyd's forest dragons in the riverside vegetation. Multiple daily departures make it easy to fit into a self-drive itinerary.
Cruises depart several times daily, with a morning or afternoon tea included depending on which departure is chosen. The boats are small enough to navigate the narrower channels where wildlife tends to congregate, and the guides are experienced naturalists with deep knowledge of the river ecosystem.
The Daintree River forms a distinct ecological boundary, south of it is the last stretch of coast highway before the ferry crossing, while north of it the ancient rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef. Cruises depart from the south bank, so no ferry crossing is required, making it accessible to visitors who prefer not to take a vehicle north of the river.
Private charter hire is available for small groups, birdwatching tours or photography charters that require a more customised itinerary.
