Ellery Creek Big Hole
A deep desert swimming hole
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Ellery Creek Big Hole is one of the largest and most popular waterholes in the West MacDonnell Ranges, located 80 kilometres west of Alice Springs. The permanent waterhole is fed by a narrow gorge framed by ancient pink and white dolomite formations, with the whole scene reflected perfectly in still water on calm mornings. It is a superb spot for a swim, though the water is strikingly cold year-round and swimmers should enter cautiously.
A short five-minute walk from the carpark brings visitors to the main waterhole, making this one of the most accessible swimming spots along Namatjira Drive. The 3-kilometre Dolomite Walk loops past extraordinary geological formations deposited more than 800 million years ago, while more experienced bushwalkers can tackle the 32-kilometre Ellery Creek loop that joins the Larapinta Trail. Morning light catches the quartzite cliffs in brilliant oranges and pinks, making the site a favourite with landscape photographers.
Camping is available at a designated Category B campsite with gas barbecues and toilets; caravans and trailers are welcome. All camping bookings and payments must be made online before arrival, no on-site payment is accepted. The last 2 kilometres of the access road are unsealed but suitable for conventional vehicles in dry conditions, though the road can become impassable briefly after heavy rain.
