Encounter Maria Island Ferry
Gateway to a car-free island
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
The Encounter Maria Island ferry is the only public way to reach Maria Island National Park, departing from the Triabunna wharf on Tasmania's east coast. The 30-minute crossing regularly treats passengers to sightings of bottlenose dolphins, and between May and November, humpback whales on their annual migration. Bookings are strongly recommended as sailings fill quickly during peak season.
The service departs from the Maria Island Gateway building at the corner of Charles Street and Esplanade West in Triabunna, roughly 90 minutes north-east of Hobart. During summer (September to April, daily except Christmas Day) there are four departures to Maria Island at 8:30 am, 10:00 am, 11:30 am and 3:15 pm. During winter (May to August, excluding Tuesdays and Thursdays) sailings run at 10:00 am, 11:30 am and 3:15 pm. All passengers must check in at the Gateway building at least 45 minutes before departure.
Same-day return fares are $56.50 per adult, $34.50 per child aged 4 to 16, and $45.00 for holders of a valid Australian concession card. Overnight return fares are slightly higher. A Tasmania National Parks pass is compulsory and purchased separately, a daily walk-in pass costs $23.85 per person. As of 2026 the island is experiencing a critical water shortage, so every visitor must carry all drinking water needed for their stay.
The island has no cars, no shops and no cafes. On arrival at Darlington jetty, wombats are commonly seen grazing on the grassy slope directly above the wharf, an immediate and memorable introduction to one of Australia's finest wildlife sanctuaries. From Darlington, the entire island is explored on foot or by hired bicycle.
