Erskine Falls
Thirty-metre cascade in rainforest
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Tucked five kilometres inland from the surf town of Lorne, Erskine Falls is one of the most impressive waterfalls on the Great Ocean Road. The falls plunge around 30 metres into a rock-lined gorge draped in tree ferns and myrtle beech, forming a scene that feels far removed from the coast just minutes away. Entry is free, and the site is accessible year-round from a well-maintained car park.
Two viewing options suit different fitness levels. A short paved track leads to an upper lookout platform in about 15 minutes, giving a clear view of the falls and the canopy below. Those who want a closer look can tackle over 300 steps down to the base of the falls, a round trip rated as strenuous, rewarded with the mist and roar of the water up close. The return climb is demanding, so sensible footwear is essential, and the path can be slippery after rain.
The surrounding Great Otway National Park forest provides a cool, shaded escape from hot summer days on the coast. Birdlife is rich along the creek corridor, with grey fantails, eastern yellow robins, and lyrebirds frequently heard in the gullies. The car park has public toilets, and Lorne's cafes and restaurants are only a short drive away for a post-walk meal.
