The Esperance Museum occupies a collection of historic buildings near the town foreshore on James Street and houses what is described as one of the largest regional museum collections outside Perth. Exhibits range from Indigenous artefacts and colonial-era farming equipment to maritime history and a piece of NASA's Skylab space station, which fell over Western Australia in 1979 and scattered debris across the Esperance district.

The collection is spread across several structures including original railway carriages and a steam locomotive displayed on its authentic tracks. Volunteer guides bring the exhibits to life, sharing stories about the region's pastoral pioneers, the pearling industry, the whaling history of the bay and the extraordinary moment Skylab came down over the south coast. The Skylab exhibit draws visitors from across Australia who are fascinated by the Cold War-era space race and the quirky local chapter it produced.

Natural history displays cover the flora and fauna of the Esperance region, including specimens gathered from Cape Le Grand and the Recherche Archipelago. A research room is available for those tracing local family or property histories, and the museum maintains an archive of photographs and records relating to the town's development from the 1860s onward.

The museum is staffed largely by volunteers and opens on selected days each week. Entry fees apply and support the ongoing care of the collection. The foreshore location puts it within easy walking distance of the town centre and the Esperance Visitor Centre.
