Everglades House and Gardens
Art Deco garden above the valley
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Regarded as one of Australia's finest inter-war gardens, Everglades is a National Trust property set on a dramatic sandstone escarpment in Leura. Designed from 1933 by master landscape designer Paul Sorensen, the terraced grounds combine ironstone walls, European plantings and native species to create a garden of extraordinary depth and seasonal colour.
The estate sits at 940 metres elevation with views across the Jamison Valley. Sorensen built the terraces and retaining walls largely by hand, shaping the steep site into a sequence of garden rooms that include a grotto pool, garden theatre, formal lawns and dense shrubberies. The Art Deco house alongside features original interiors open to visitors on guided and self-guided tours.
The property is listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register and has been managed by the National Trust since 1962. Tea rooms operate on selected days, serving light lunches and refreshments. The gardens are at their peak in spring and autumn, when flowering trees and cool-climate shrubs provide vivid displays of colour.
