Heart Reef is a naturally heart-shaped coral formation nestled within Hardy Reef in the outer Great Barrier Reef, visible only from the air. A scenic flight over this iconic landmark, combined with sweeping views of Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet, and the 74 Whitsunday Islands, is one of the most memorable experiences available in the region, offering a perspective on the reef and islands that no boat trip can match.

Flights depart from Whitsunday Airport at Flame Tree, approximately 8 minutes from Airlie Beach, with multiple daily departures from early morning through to early afternoon. Standard scenic flights run for around 60 minutes and are operated by fixed-wing light aircraft, with each passenger guaranteed a window seat. The flight path passes over Heart Reef, the full length of Whitehaven Beach, and Hill Inlet, with pilot commentary throughout.

Swimming and snorkelling directly at Heart Reef is not permitted, as the formation is a protected area within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. However, nearby Hardy Reef pontoon sites allow in-water experiences for those booking extended reef day tours. The aerial view remains the primary draw, and the contrast of the heart shape against the surrounding blue water is most vivid in clear morning light.

Several operators run scenic flights from Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island, including seaplane, helicopter, and light aircraft options across a range of durations and price points.
