Cool-climate elegance near Launceston
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Josef Chromy Wines sits on a beautiful 61-hectare estate at Relbia, just ten minutes south of Launceston and close to the airport, making it one of the most accessible Tamar Valley cellar doors for visitors pressed for time. The estate produces sparkling wines, pinot noir, chardonnay and riesling under the cool Tasmanian sky, and the award-winning restaurant overlooks a tranquil lake fringed by willows. The cellar door is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm.
Josef Chromy, the man, arrived in Australia from Czechoslovakia in 1950 with almost nothing and built a remarkable business career before turning his attention to wine in his seventies. The estate at Relbia opened in 2007 and quickly established itself as one of Tasmania's benchmark producers, particularly for its methode traditionnelle sparkling wines and its single-vineyard pinot noir. Tastings in the cellar door include a flight of four wines, with knowledgeable staff guiding guests through the estate's style and the character of each vintage.
Beyond the cellar door, the estate restaurant is a destination in its own right, drawing on the Tamar Valley's produce to create menus that change with the seasons. The parklike grounds invite a leisurely stroll around the lake, and in fine weather the outdoor terrace is one of the loveliest places to linger over a glass of sparkling in all of northern Tasmania. Bookings are recommended for tastings, particularly on weekends, and are essential for the restaurant.
