Founded in 2005 by Chris Brolga Barns, The Kangaroo Sanctuary is a 188-acre private refuge for orphaned and rescued kangaroos on the outskirts of Alice Springs. Small guided sunset tours are the only way to visit, ensuring the animals remain calm and the experience stays intimate, a deliberate choice that makes this one of the most personal wildlife encounters available anywhere in Australia.

The sanctuary accepts only pre-booked small groups and runs guided tours on selected evenings timed to coincide with the golden hour when kangaroos become most active. The tour lasts roughly two and a half hours and includes time to sit quietly among the mob as the light fades over the surrounding ranges.

Brolga's story gained wide public attention through the documentary film Kangaroo Dundee, which followed his work hand-raising orphaned joeys. Many of the kangaroos at the sanctuary were rescued as orphans after their mothers were killed on roads, and staff explain the rehabilitation process and the challenges of releasing animals back into the wild.

Young children are not permitted on tours in order to protect both the animals and the quality of the experience for other guests. Bus transfers are included in the tour price from central Alice Springs accommodation, and booking well in advance is strongly recommended during the peak season from April to September.
