Koala Conservation Reserve
Koalas in their natural habitat
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Nestled in a pocket of native bushland near Cowes, the Koala Conservation Reserve on Phillip Island offers one of the best opportunities in Victoria to see wild koalas up close. Elevated treetop boardwalks wind through the eucalyptus canopy, placing visitors at eye level with these iconic marsupials as they rest and feed in the branches above.
The reserve is managed by Phillip Island Nature Parks and covers a significant area of remnant habitat where koalas roam freely. The treetop boardwalks were specifically designed to minimise disturbance to the animals while giving visitors an intimate viewing experience without any barriers or enclosures.
In addition to koalas, the reserve is home to wallabies, echidnas, and a wide variety of native birds. Guided ranger talks are available on selected days and provide detailed information about koala ecology, the challenges facing wild populations, and the conservation work being done on the island.
The reserve is well suited to families with young children, as the boardwalk is accessible and the koalas are reliably present throughout the year. Late afternoon is often the best time to visit, when koalas become more active and begin feeding.
