Port Macquarie Koala Hospital
Caring for wild koalas
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital is the world's first and longest-running dedicated koala hospital, operated by Koala Conservation Australia. Visitors can watch rescued koalas being cared for by vets and volunteers, learn about koala health, and support one of Australia's most vital wildlife conservation programmes. The current visitor experience is based at Guulabaa, Place of Koala, in Lake Innes while the original site is redeveloped.
Established in 1973, the hospital has treated thousands of koalas injured by cars, dogs and disease. At the Guulabaa visitor centre guests can observe koalas on shaded recovery platforms, explore interactive exhibits, and watch education presentations about koala ecology and the threats facing wild populations.
The 100-hectare Guulabaa property also houses the hospital's wild koala breeding programme, with observation decks allowing views into natural bushland enclosures. The on-site gift shop and nearby cafe make it easy to spend a few hours while contributing directly to koala conservation through entry fees and purchases.
Guulabaa is located about 15 minutes' drive from the Port Macquarie town centre, set within Cowarra State Forest. The accessible walking paths and viewing decks suit visitors of all mobility levels.
