Jervis Bay Maritime Museum
Historic ferry, living history
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
The Jervis Bay Maritime Museum at the Lady Denman Heritage Complex in Huskisson is home to the beautifully restored wooden ferry Lady Denman, built right here on the shores of Jervis Bay in 1911 and retired from Sydney Harbour service in 1979. The museum also houses a maritime gallery, historic boathouse, fish feeding pond, mangrove boardwalk, and native gardens, making it a thoroughly absorbing half-day stop for visitors of all ages.
The centrepiece of the complex is the Lady Denman herself, a clinker-built wooden vessel that served as an inner-harbour Sydney ferry for nearly seven decades. Detailed interpretive displays trace the history of boat-building in the Jervis Bay region and explain the vessel's construction, her working life, and the community effort that saved her from demolition. The gallery alongside presents changing exhibitions on maritime heritage and local history.
Outside, native gardens and a mangrove boardwalk offer a peaceful stroll with good birdwatching. A fish feeding pond is popular with children. The complex sits directly on the foreshore at Huskisson, with Jervis Bay visible behind the buildings and easy access to the town's cafes and waterfront.
