Ocean Beach
Tasmania's longest wild shore
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Stretching more than 30 kilometres between Trial Harbour in the north and Macquarie Heads in the south, Ocean Beach is Tasmania's longest beach and one of its most elemental. Six kilometres from Strahan along Ocean Beach Road, the car park and lookout sit above a shore that faces the full force of the Southern Ocean after waves travel unbroken for some 20,000 kilometres.
The beach is unpatrolled and unsafe for swimming, but it rewards visitors who come to walk, beachcomb and simply stand in the wind. Smooth coloured stones, kelp and shells wash up constantly, and the sand holds the footprints of red-capped plovers, sooty oystercatchers and short-tailed shearwaters. Wedge-tailed eagles and sea eagles circle overhead on most visits.
The mouth of the Henty River at the northern end of the beach is a favourite spot among local anglers targeting Australian salmon, shark and skate. A four-wheel-drive track along the sand gives access to the Henty Dunes further north, though the drive requires experience and appropriate tyre pressure. The lookout car park is accessible by any vehicle on the short approach road.
Entry is free and the beach is open at all times. Bring layers, even on clear summer days, the Roaring Forties make conditions brisk.
