Old Beechworth Gaol
Granite walls, gripping stories
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Completed in 1864, the Old Beechworth Gaol held some of the most notorious figures of colonial Victoria within its thick granite walls, and it remained a working prison for over 140 years. Today it offers guided history tours through cellblocks, a guard tower, and a gallows exhibit, giving visitors an unflinching look at crime, punishment, and the harsh realities of 19th-century incarceration in rural Victoria.
The History Essentials Tour runs daily and lasts approximately 45 minutes. Knowledgeable guides walk visitors through original cell blocks and exercise yards, sharing the stories of those imprisoned here, from Kelly Gang sympathisers to desperate gold rush-era criminals who left their marks scratched into the stonework.
Family Tours run during Victorian school holidays and are tailored to engage younger visitors with age-appropriate storytelling and hands-on moments. The gaol's courtyard and guard tower provide the kind of atmospheric backdrop that makes history feel genuinely immediate.
The venue also operates a cafe serving specialty coffee and light refreshments. Private tours for groups can be arranged directly with the operators.
