Woolshed Falls
Cascades and gold history
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Located in Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park about 10 minutes north of Beechworth, Woolshed Falls drops roughly 15 metres over a near-vertical granite face before spreading across a wide cascade bed. The surrounding valley was home to one of the richest alluvial goldfields in Victoria, with up to 8,000 prospectors working along Spring Creek during the 1850s gold rush.
An easy circuit walk of around 1.6 kilometres leads from the car park to an observation deck overlooking the falls, with views across the forested valley below. After rain the falls broaden dramatically, and the upstream cascades become particularly spectacular. The site is best visited in winter or early spring when water levels are at their most photogenic.
The picnic area beside the car park has tables, woodfire barbecues, and toilet facilities, making this a comfortable half-day outing for families. Rocks around the falls and cascades are slippery, so sturdy footwear is essential and children need close supervision near the water's edge.
For those wanting a longer outing, the Cascades to Woolshed Falls trail extends to roughly 14 kilometres as a loop and passes the most extensive remnants of alluvial gold workings in the area. No entry fee applies.
