Darwin Festival
Eighteen days of music, theatre, art and outdoor events across the Top End capital, held in the dry season under the tropical night sky.
Darwin Festival runs for 18 days every August across multiple venues in the Top End capital, with a strong focus on indigenous performance, outdoor concerts and tropical-night events.
Darwin Festival is the major arts festival of the Northern Territory and has run annually since 1979. It takes over Darwin for 18 days every August, deep in the dry season when the weather is at its best. The festival timetable is built around outdoor performances at the Festival Park venue at the State Square, plus shows at the Darwin Entertainment Centre, the Darwin Convention Centre and pop-up sites across the city.
The programme includes contemporary music, theatre, dance, comedy, cabaret, visual art and film, with a particularly strong indigenous performance and visual art programme. Festival Park, the temporary outdoor village in the city centre, becomes the social hub of Darwin for the duration with a beer garden, food trucks, a curated programme of free outdoor concerts and a dramatic visual identity that changes each year.
Darwin Festival overlaps with the Garma Festival in north-east Arnhem Land and with the National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) cultural events nearby, making August the densest month in the year for indigenous arts in northern Australia. Many international visitors who fly in for Garma also attend Darwin Festival to bookend the trip.
Darwin in August is dry, warm and sunny, with daytime temperatures around 30 degrees and almost no rain. Accommodation in the city books out well in advance for the festival period, and visitors should plan flights and beds at least three months ahead.
